World heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has told Black Lives Matter protesters that they are the "vaccine" to the "virus" of racism.

Joshua told the crowd in Watford to "stand united against the virus that has been instrumental in taking lives".

"The virus I am referring to is called racism," he said, comparing its damage to that of COVID-19, and asking "how long are we going to allow racism to spread through our communities?"

"You are the vaccine, I am the vaccine," Joshua said, as he joined thousands of people attending demonstrations across the country after the killing of George Floyd in the US.

"Killing a person outright is unforgivable," Joshua told the crowd.

"But stripping them of their human rights, oppressing them, mocking them, insulting them, placing glass ceilings above them... is just a slower way of killing them and taking the life out of their soul."

Joshua, the IBF, WBA and WBO champion, was said to be on crutches as a precaution after experiencing a "twinge" in training.
